Our presentation features new editions by Jeffrey Gibson, David Lynch, Alison Saar, and T.L. Solien, along with recent editions by Derrick Adams, Maser, Swoon, and Mickalene Thomas.

Alison Saar’s new prints primarily reference various rituals, expectations, and connotations around Black hair. Saar depicts figures that embody resilience and determination, acknowledging the racial injustices that led to these cultural presentations of Black hair without succumbing to them.

Jeffrey Gibson’s vibrant works reference Modern Art, geometric abstraction, and maximalism while serving as a prominent example of Indigenous Futurism. By incorporating recognizable Native American materials in his work – he specifically used woven beadwork and elk-hide drums in these new editions – these artworks reorient the place and status of Native art within contemporary culture.

T.L. Solien’s new screen print represents a recent turn further into abstraction for the artist’s work. Although the still life image of a chair has appeared throughout art history, Solien breaks up the chair within its environment in The Spanish Chair with a fresh color palette. The composition largely gains a sense of space by the inclusion of a few select rounded shapes that stand out against a majority of rectangular shapes.

David Lynch’s new suite of Distorted Nude Photogravures is his first series published with Tandem Press since 2008. In these twelve prints, distorted figures contort, bend, reach, and pose within strange environments that, while mostly unclearly defined, seem to be domestic spaces. The images are set within a deep velvety black square. This format, reminiscent of film, aligns the prints with Lynch’s cinematic work and lends a voyeuristic edge to the images.
